The One Thing Study

The One Thing Study is a valuable tool to help you to grow in your Christian faith. It consists of the following four steps.

  1. readPick a book of the Bible. All of the bible is “living and active” (Hebrews 4:12) so you can pick any book. However, if this is your first time reading the bible on your own you may want to consider beginning by reading several New Testament books first. Two good books to start with are the gospel of John and the book of Romans.

  2. Read a chapter. Each book of the bible consists of chapters. Each chapter is marked by a number. Start with the first chapter of the book you pick and read consecutively until you have read through the entire book chapter by chapter. Reading a chapter at a time requires little time and helps sharpen your focus. Reading through an entire book enables you to interact with all of what God penned for that particular book.

  3. MarkBible the one thing in the chapter that speaks to you the most. You may find yourself noticing several things. If so, narrow them down to one thing God might be speaking to you most about. Conversely you may not notice anything. If this is the case, stop and ask God to point one thing out to you and reread  chapter. Do this as times as necessary until you notice something that speaks to you. If you are reading in a bible, mark it. Underline, circle, box, highlight, etc. Whatever you do make sure you mark it. This is an essential step that can not be overlooked. You may mark an entire verse, a sentence, a part of a sentence, a phrase or word. It does not matter.

  4. PrayerHave a meaningful conversation with God about the one thing you just marked. This is called prayer. The key is not just DO a One Thing Study but that it be meaningful. Having meaningful conversations with God strengthens our faith like nothing else. You may find yourself thanking Him, praising Him, asking Him important questions, expressing deep thoughts to Him or confessing sin to Him.  Let the Holy Spirit guide your conversation. The key is that your conversation with God relate to the “one thing” he just spoke to you about, and that it be MEANINGFUL. True worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. John 4:23 NLT.
